The "Rideout" comes from the Rideout family, that paid for the fountain. It lay in the center of a grove of trees on the path between The De Young Museum and the California Academy Of Sciences. Out of the frame to the left was the Bandstand.

The Statue

The statue in the center of the fountain was created by Melvin Earl Cummings. The budget didn't allow for bronze so the statue was made of stone. It featured a Puma fighting a large snake.
