The Platform Of A Car

The end of each passenger car was an outdoor platform. Notice the steel plate that could swing up (as now) to allow use of the steps, or could be swung down to create a level platform.

In the old days, politicians would stand on just such a platform to give speeches at each town along a rail line.

The track upon which the White Pass & Yukon route traveled. It used wooden ties in a rock bed. The rail sections were coupled with steel plates and bolts, not welded. These tracks gave the train its old-fashioned clickety-clack rhythm while riding it.
