Balboa Park, Miniature Railroad

Ticket Booth
The ticket booth was not open on a Monday. The signs indicated that a single 3 minute ride cost US $2.00. The railroad was located outside the Zoo, half way between the Zoo entrance and the Carousel.

Train Storage
The train was not in operation that day and was stored inside its tunnel. The fake stone entrance created the illusion of a tunnel, while actually it was merely a covered trench.

Entertaining Signs
Entertaining signs paralleled the tracks. The "When Peter Piper," and "Pickle Picker," were part of a Burma Shave ad. The "Tijuana" sign marked the most southern extent of the ride.

Despite Rain
On Sunday morning the train ran, despite a persistent drizzle. This was a model G16 train operating on 16" gauge track that covered almost four acres under tall eucalyptus trees.

Holes In Roof
This small railroad with its diesel engine and passenger cars had holes in its roof so that its full sized engineer and passengers could fit.

Giraffe And Leopard
A stuffed giraffe and a stuffed leopard rode in the open-top cars to add a zoo feeling to the train. The ride was entirely outside the zoo.

Return from Tijuana
The train in the distance was returning from its long southern leg to Tijuana, Mexico. Ahead, and just off frame, was its tunnel.

Through The Tunnel
The train trip ended by returning back through its tunnel and on its way to its final stop at the ticket booth.
