Leucadendron Argenteum, African Bush
|
The central stem or trunk
The central stem or trunk had an identifying sign attached. Note that this is techinically part of the shrub family, but resembles a tree in that it has a single central trunk. Sparkling leaves
Light-reflecting leaves present a silky silver look that seems to sparkle in any breeze. The leaves are actually a silver-grey but are covered with silverish hairs. The characteristic silver look of the leaves is caused by the hairs. Shape of the leaves
The leaf shape are clearly visible here. They radiate up the stem in an overlapping radial pattarn. Each leaf is about 6 inches (150 mm) long. An endangered plant
Leucadendron Argenteum is classified as Rare and Endangered. This plant propagates by being burned in occassional fires and does not do well in fire suppression areas. A young plant
Here grouped together in the African exhibit area were flowers, a Leucadendron Argenteum, and Thamnochor Tuslucens grass. The Leucadendron Argenteum was a young example of the bush just beginning its life.
