Ometepe Island lay inside Lake Nicaragua, a huge freshwater lake. Pond scum had formed alongside the shore and underneath a tree that dropped tiny white flowers onto the scum.

Pale Green Scum Covered Overflow

A pale green pond scum had grown to cover the area just below the overflow of a now dry aqueduct. The vivid green might have been due to the presence of rich compost in the nearby farm soil.

Years earlier, two trees had fallen into a depression high in the Wyoming mountains. Rain and snow filled the depression resulting in lily pads and algae (pond scum).
