Short Walk, Mombacho Volcano
|
The Sign
A sign marked the entrance to the short walk. Note that access to the long walk was accessed by way of this short walk via branch on the right of the map. The distance around this small crater rim was 1.5km.

Stairs Down
The steps that led down into the start of the short path were dirt filled and held back by boards.

Clouds At Volcano Top Formed Fog
Clouds that afternoon wrapped around the top of the volcano. But up inside those clouds they appeared more as fog.

Sign At View Platform
A sign described what would have been seen had it not been for the fog. The sign was also the natural place for the application of graffiti.

High Moisture Content
A high level of moisture in the clouds and fog resulted in droplets forming on the ends of fern leaves.

Paved With Logs
The ends of logs were used to pave parts of the path through the moist layer of forest. Unfortunately, log ends could become very slippery when wet. Although a few slipped, none fell.

A Crack In The Wall
A side path ran through a crack in the wall of the crater caused by an earthquake. The sides of the path were barely a meter (a yard) across at the floor and widened gradually far overhead. Over the years, forest has almost overgrown the top of this wound.

Edge Of A Cliff
A fenced path ran alongside a cliff. Good thing the forest hid the drop from sight or this view might have been frightening. Note the slippery wet wood that formed the floor of this part of the path.

Dry Forest
As the path level dropped into a lower altitude the nature of the forest changed into a dry forest. More wild flowers were found at this altitude.

A view of the inner volcano rim as seen from the dry forest layer. Note the fog still shrouding the upper layer.

World's Smallest Orchid
An example of the world's smallest orchid. Barely a millimeter across, it could be seen on the underside of the oval leaf in the center of this photograph. What looked like a tiny bug was the orchid.

A Stink Bug
On the upper part of another leaf was a large stink bug. This time the leaf was large. The stink bug was roughly 2.5 cm (1 inch) long.

A Frog
Underneath yet another leaf was a small green frog who hid during daylight hours. The guide held this leaf inverted so that this photograph could be taken.
