The morning was hazy but warm with almost no wind at all. Here, a girl attempted to fly a small paper kite while others around her simply waited for the larger kites to be flown.

Two hotels faced the beach. The one shown here, the Shearwater Inn external link, was to the right of the beach. Here a small paper kite in the shape of an eagle was flown. Because air was calm but unsettled that morning, the wind direction kept changing. When this breeze came up, the wind direction was from the ocean.

Not enough wind was blowing to hold large kites up that day. Here, a whale kite was laying on the beach waiting for a decent wind to come up. This day it looked more like a beached whale.

A flag motif kite almost flew that mid day. A slightly stronger breeze blew briefly and this man tried to take advantage by lofting his kite. With effort, it flew like this for perhaps two minutes.

Girl Ran To Keep Kite Up

There was so little wind that this girl had to run to keep her kite up. Clearly those sitting and waiting for the larger kites were disappointed by the lack of wind.

Video Of Circular Kite Not Launching
(6 of 7) (8588 views)

This video shows several men struggling to get one large circular kite aloft. The wind had briefly increased but not enough for them to succeed. Just enough wind to tempt, but not enough wind to fly a kite.

How To Anchor A kite In Sand
(7 of 7) (8605 views)

One good way to anchor a kite in sand is by filling a stout sack with sand so that the weight of the sand becomes the anchor. This is similar to sand bags used in movie and video production, or sand bags used to hold floods at bay.
