The Sign
A sign near the sculpture described it. It read in part, Michael Christian

Just Outside
The sign was located just outside the entry to the Downtown Berkeley BART Station. A lower sign said, "Please do not climb sculpture."

A Globe
The sculpture was a globe on a stand. It looked like an oversized, abstract version of the schoolroom globes of days gone by.

Maps
The surface of the art globe appeared to depict city streets as they might radiate outward from a city center. A curved gap might have been a river separating one part of a city from another.

In Context
The globe as it lay in context in the Downtown BART plaza with Chase Bank behind it, and with the Downtown Berkeley BART Station to is right.

The Base
The base of the sculpture radiated in slices like an apple pie or a pizza. I didn't actually try to rotate the sculpture, but it appeared to be free to rotate.

The Lower Pivot
The lower pivot was attached with six stout bolts. There was just the slightest hint of rust around the bold heads.

Close Up Streets
A closer view of the street pieces that formed the surface of the map. Notice how each section was spot welded to the next.

Many Layers
Looking upward toward the top, the many layers of construction became visible. It was like the peels of an onion or the layers of an ancient city.

Top Pivot
The pivot at the top of the sculpture had an object next to it. Either that object was a darkness sensor for interior lights, or a web camera to monitor the sculpture visitors.
